Glossary / Speed to Lead
Speed to Lead
Speed to lead is the time between when a potential customer first contacts a business and when that business sends its first reply.
Why it matters
It is the single number most linked to whether an inquiry turns into a booked job, because the first company to respond usually frames the rest of the conversation.
Speed to lead is measured from the moment an inquiry arrives, by phone, web form, email or any other channel, to the moment a real reply goes out. "Real" excludes automatic acknowledgments like "we received your message," which do not answer the person’s actual question.
There is no single industry benchmark that fits every trade, because urgency differs: a burst pipe and a kitchen remodel do not compete on the same clock. The practical target is to reply before the customer contacts the next company on their list.
Example
A homeowner submits a web form at 9:47 PM. The business replies with a qualifying question at 9:48 PM. Speed to lead for that inquiry is one minute.
