Glossary / On-Call Rotation

On-Call Rotation

An on-call rotation is a schedule that assigns a specific person as the one who gets alerted for urgent matters during a given period, usually with a backup if the primary does not respond.

Why it matters

A clear rotation is what turns "someone should handle emergencies" into a real system: without a named person and backup, emergency alerts can go to no one in particular.

A well-designed rotation specifies who is primary, who is backup, how they are alerted (a phone call is more reliable than a message alone for true emergencies), and how long to wait before escalating to the next person.

Rotations typically cycle weekly or by shift, and should account for vacations and sick days explicitly rather than assuming someone will informally cover.

Example

A plumbing company’s on-call rotation has one technician as primary each week, with the owner as backup if the primary does not confirm within 5 minutes of an emergency alert.
